Spring Bloom Point Lobos

Spring Bloom, Point Lobos 40 x 48 inches

Here is a recent painting of the poppies that have been blooming at point lobos over the last couple of months. I spent a number of days painting field studies out there, and this is the large studio work that came from those studies.

at this point in the painting i decided the foreground needed

to be reorganized, eliminating the bushes in the

extreme foreground so the viewers eye entered the painting

from the right side of the canvas

more editing and adjusting shapes and values and

temperatures of the grass and poppies

the finished painting is at the top

california Art Club Gold Medal Show open until april24

The California Art Club's 100th annual Gold Medal exhibition openend last weekend. Such a fun evening with lots of great work! The show is held at the Pasasdena Museum of California Art and will be on view until april 24, 2011. Visit their website www.pmca.org for directions and info on the show.

I was honored to receive the Irvine Museum Award for my painting "Cypress and Fog, Point Lobos". Given by Jean Stern, the Director of the Irvine Museum, this award was given to painting in the show that best represents the traditional California impressionist collection of the Irvine Museum.

Here is a photo of the field study that was the inspiration for the larger work in the show.

Catalina Paintings

Here are a few studies from my recent trip to catalina island. This has been an annual trip for the last seven years with artists Jeff Horn and Mike Obermeyer, and this year photographer Bill Braly. A special thanks to the Catalina Island Conservancy for making these trips possible and allowing us access to the entire island. The weather this year was perfect!
